There are a lot of open-ended dialogues in this game. That’s because the story moves in chapters, and with each chapter, we meet new customers while the ones from the previous one are simply… gone.
Wanderstop’s structure is divided into five chapters, with each chapter bringing in new visitors, shifting the environment, and subtly altering the tea shop’s surroundings. Through a mix of simple yet engaging mechanics—tea crafting, gardening, and shopkeeping—players uncover Alta’s past, interact with a diverse cast of NPCs, and gradually piece together the unspoken rules of the world around them.
It’s almost too real. Because we’ve seen this before. We’ve lived this before. People fall ill every day because of overwork. We ignore the signs—pushing past fatigue, brushing off dizziness, swallowing the headaches—until our bodies finally give up on us.
If you've ever worked yourself to the point of exhaustion, blamed yourself for just "not trying hard enough" when you know full well your resources are depleted, or felt like a failure for not being the best in the world at something – you might need to put some time aside for Wanderstop.
. There were times when I felt like I was grieving – not just over a sad moment or for the loss of a character, but also a loss of self.
When going to therapy (or indeed starting any hobby or self-improvement pursuit) you'll often be told "you get out of this what you put in". The same is true of Wanderstop. The game offers a varied and largely self-guided experience, but it asks you to engage in its journey with an open heart.
These characters are colorful, but it’s important that they aren't just quirky for quirky’s sake, either. Each one reflects a little bit of Elevada back at her, helping to advance her own emotional journey forward, and saying goodbye as they inevitably moved on was always difficult.
What’s great about Elevada as a main character is that you get plenty of opportunities to choose interesting paths of dialogue throughout your time at Wanderstop. At first, your options might be limited to either a mean answer or a snarky answer, but as time goes on, you’ll get to choose between options that reveal a streak of humor under all of Alta’s steely resolve.
As I said, this is not a story about burn out alone, but an insightful exploration of why we often burn ourselves out over and over again. Maybe you’re familiar with the feeling: You push yourself day after day not just to meet deadlines or complete projects, but to maintain that control you need over your life to stay on the right course.
And then there’s the Tea Breaks. I already mentioned them before, Wanderstop Gameplay but I have to talk about how much they add to Elevada’s journey.
Unfortunately, Alta's quest is cut short by her sudden inability to lift her sword. She collapses in the woods, and awakens outside an unassuming little tea shop called Wanderstop.
